The Plan

Last night I ordered a 500 GB hard drive (I already have another that used to be in the old Dell) to set up a 500 GB redundant Raid array as well as a Lacie Rugged 320 GB USB drive for taking back and forth to DJ nights and anywhere that isn’t my desk. Chase Jarvis, a bigshot commercial photographer, also says to keep an offsite backup incase your house burns down. So I’m going to pay $5 for unlimited capacity backup at Mozy.com.

My experience gave me a pretty swift kick in the ass about backups. It’s about time everybody started taking it seriously.

Storage Nightmare

So my 300 GB Maxtor drive containing photo backups and my music library corrupted itself this week. The music is a pain because I use it to DJ and well, other than what’s on my flickr at a low resolution, all photos taken before February of this year are gone. I’ve tried Data Rescue and other free trial scanners to see if they can come up with anything but to no avail.

Seagate/Maxtor’s data recovery wants $1700 to get it all back, and for a student this is pretty much out of the question.

I’m looking into Mozy and RAID with something a little more rugged for taking to DJ nights. Anyone got any other suggestions?

Also I found it funny that a Maxtor One Touch III would have a Seagate drive inside of it since Maxtor manufactures their own 3.5 inch drives.
